Warnings & alerts

How do I get warned?
Two free ways. Without an account: enter your town or ZIP and your email on Get warnings and confirm the link we send you (up to three places per address). With an account: sign up, save your places under Saved locations, and turn on push notifications for your phone or computer.
Which warnings will I get?
Tornado, severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings whose warned area covers your place; winter storm, blizzard, ice storm, high wind and extreme heat warnings for your area; hurricane and tropical storm watches and warnings; and evacuation or civil emergency orders. Saved places on an account can also get tornado watches. One message per warning, and another only if it gets worse: the storm is tagged destructive, a tornado is confirmed, or an emergency is declared.
Why didn't I get an alert?
  • Is the place right? We alert when the warning's area covers your place, not the whole county, so a warning for the other end of your county won't reach you.
  • Are notifications allowed? In your browser, tap the padlock next to atmostorm.com and allow notifications.
  • On an iPhone, push only works after you add Atmostorm to your Home Screen (Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen), then turn it on from there.
  • Opened from Facebook or Instagram? Their built-in browsers can't do push. Open atmostorm.com in Safari or Chrome.
  • Account settings: check the place's minimum severity under Saved locations, and that your email is verified.
  • We check for new warnings every two minutes, so an alert can take a moment.
How do I stop the emails or change my places?
Every warning email has a stop link at the bottom. On an account, change places, alert settings and notifications under Saved locations.

The map & the data

Is Atmostorm an official source?
No. Atmostorm is independent and isn't affiliated with the National Weather Service or any government agency. We bring public data together so it's easier to see, but always follow the National Weather Service and your local officials before acting.
Where does the data come from?
Warnings and forecasts from the National Weather Service; outlooks and watches from the Storm Prediction Center; hurricanes from the National Hurricane Center; NEXRAD and MRMS radar; GOES satellite; HRRR model forecasts; and river levels from the U.S. Geological Survey with NWS river forecasts. More on the About page.
What do the colors on the map mean?
Each layer has its own legend on the map. Warnings run from yellow and orange to red for severe and dark red for extreme, with magenta for a tornado emergency. River gauges are blue when normal, yellow near flood stage, then orange, red and dark red for minor, moderate and major flooding.
Is it free?
Yes: no ads, no paywall, and we don't sell your location. Atmostorm is kept going by readers; if you'd like to help, see Support us.
